The lower jaw is grooved to cradle and support the prong during the lift, while the upper jaw is slightly cut back and hooked to catch securely under the tip of the prong as it rests against the stone. This geometry gives the setter precise, repeatable leverage with reduced risk of marring the prong or stone.
