William Harrison Ainsworth, author Product:Canvas by clearing ball from AndyWilliam Harrison Ainsworth, author, 1881. Ainsworth (1805 1882) was a prolific writer of historical romantic fiction. His best known works were 'Rookwood' (1834), which popularised the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin, and 'Windsor Castle' (1843), which concerns the legend of Herne the Hunter.
