Charles I of England mb-artist John_Phillip Butler won a silver medalCharles I of England, (1784). Portrait of King Charles I (1600 1649), who succeeded his father James I as King in 1625. His reign was dominated by a bitter dispute with Parliament over the extent of royal power, which culminated in 1642 in the English Civil War, and Charles' eventual execution for treason.
