To avoid American air power, these missions were conducted at night and became known as the Tokyo Express, first seen during the struggle for Guadalcanal. While the USN tried to disrupt Japanese forces on New Georgia Island with cruisers and destroyers, PT boats proved crucial in sinking one destroyer and damaging another.
