During the 1930s he was also Vice-Chairman of the National Trust

Southwark Cathedral was originally the priory church of St Mary Ovarie. In 1539, at the Reformation, the Priory was supressed and it became the parish church of St Saviour, Southwark. In 1897 St Saviour became Southwark Cathedral.
